Visual Poetics
Agnès Godard, born on 28 May 1951, is a celebrated French cinematographer, renowned for her long-standing collaboration with filmmaker Claire Denis. Winning a César Award for her work, Godard initially studied journalism before shifting her focus to film, graduating from La Femis (formerly IDHEC) in 1980. Her career began with Wim Wenders' Room 666 (1982), a 50-minute TV project where she met Denis, who was working as Wenders' assistant director. During the 1980s, Godard worked as an assistant camera operator and focus puller on films by renowned directors such as Wenders, Joseph Losey, Peter Greenaway, and Alain Resnais.
She also worked as the director of photography for a short film by Henri Alekan. Godard's first major collaboration with Denis was on Chocolat (1988), where she served as a camera operator. Since then, she has been Denis' trusted cinematographer, contributing to numerous acclaimed films, including Beau Travail (1999), Trouble Every Day (2001), 35 Rhums (2008), and Let the Sunshine In (2017).
Anil Mehta is a renowned Indian cinematographer, film director, and writer who has made significant contributions to Hindi cinema. A founding member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC), Mehta began his career assisting Ketan Mehta on films like Holi (1984) and Mirch Masala (1987) while still a student. His debut as a cinematographer came with the Indo-German short film The Cloud Door (1994), followed by his first full-length feature, Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), marking Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut. Mehta won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography in 1999 for his stunning work on Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and gained further acclaim for his work on the Oscar-nominated Lagaan (2001).
Over the years, he has worked on several iconic films, including Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Rockstar (2011), and Highway (2014). In 2007, Mehta made his directorial debut with Aaja Nachle, a Yash Raj Films production featuring Madhuri Dixit's much-anticipated comeback. Known for his ability to blend visual storytelling with emotional depth, Mehta remains a celebrated figure in Indian cinema.
Pooja Gupte is an accomplished Indian cinematographer renowned for her creative vision and expertise behind the camera. A graduate in Photography with a specialization in Commercial Art, she honed her craft at the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. In 2012, she was selected as an Indian cinematographer at the Berlinale Talent Campus in Germany and later showcased her work at the Stuttgart-Indian Film Festival in 2019 as part of the Making of Indian Cinema series. Her debut feature film as Director of Photography, Crossing Bridges, which she also produced under her banner Easel Films, earned the National Film Award in 2014. Pooja received the Best Cinematography award for Rukh at the 5th AIFF in 2018.
Recently, her work on Panchak, a feature film produced by Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Sriram Nene, garnered praise during its theatrical run. She has also completed projects for Viacom and Zee Studios, including Silence-2, produced by veteran cinematographer Kiran Deohans. Alongside her feature films, Pooja has contributed to numerous short films and commercials, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and skilled cinematographer.
